Researchers have known for a long time that the cerebellum is an important part of the brain for controlling movement. It is broadly accepted that the cerebellum plays a role in tics, but we know little about the connections between the cerebellum and other regions of the brain in TS. In a recent study we found that young people with TS have a stronger relationship between cerebellum and areas at the front and in the middle of the brain; and a weaker relationship between cerebellum and areas at the back of the brain. This research is an important step to finding out which brain regions are involved in the chain reaction of brain activity which results in the occurrence of tics.
